The Emirates NBD Classics VII presents Pandit Jasraj and Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia perform live in an awe inspiring Jugalbandi at DUCTAC on Friday 23 March 2018.
A jugalbandi or jugalbandhi is a performance in Indian classical music, especially in Hindustani classical music, that features a duet of two solo musicians.
The word jugalbandi means, literally, "entwined twins." The duet can be either vocal or instrumental.
Often, the musicians will play different instruments.
Sangeet Martand Pandit Jasraj
As a recipient of Padma Vibhushan, Indian classical music today, is one of the greatest gifts of India to the world.
And a blessed few, much beyond their fame and fortune, have devoted their lives to bolster this claim far and wide.
While renowned instrumentalists have done it through their chosen instruments, like the Sitar and the Sarod, Pandit Jasraj has done it through that one God-gifted instrument: his voice.
Pandit Jasraj’s achievements are beyond compare more so because vocal music is the most intimate and direct medium according to India’s musical treatise and tradition.
And almost beyond belief is also the fact that he has carved out his monumental global following without depriving his many million domestic admirers.
He has been passionately loyal to his soil, while his music has scaled ethereal heights all over the planet.
He has single-handedly paved the way for Indian vocal classical music to resonate across the world.
Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia
An internationally acclaimed flautist of India, Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia is a very popular and eminent artiste par excellence who is known for his outstanding contribution in popularizing Indian classical music all over the world.
His consummate artistry has distinguished him as the greatest living master of the North Indian Bamboo Flute, acclaimed both at home and abroad.
Unlike many other great Indian artistes, Pandit Chaurasia does not come from a family of musicians.
Rather, music is a path he found for himself and struggled very hard to overcome all the hurdles that came his way to emerge out successful with his sheer grit, sincerity, hard work, devotion and dedication.
As a musician Pandit Chaurasia is a rare combination of an innovator and a traditionalist. He has significantly expanded the expressive possibilities of classical North Indian flute playing through his masterful blowing technique and his unique adaptation of alaap and jod to the flute.
He is an immensely popular artiste in India and abroad.
Pandit Chaurasia’s horizons also extend beyond North Indian classical music to Indian folk and popular music and to western music as well.
