A landmark for the UAE, Expo 2020 Dubai has commissioned an opera, which will have its premiere at Dubai Opera from Thursday 16 to Sunday 19 December 2021.

Combining the best Emirati and global talent, Al Wasl Opera brings together more than 100 artists and musicians, plus a production team of 70 professionals.

Composed by Mohammed Fairouz and co-authored and written by Maha Gargash, Al Wasl Opera is produced in collaboration with Welsh National Opera, conducted by Justin Brown and directed by Sir David Pountney.

Sung in English, Al Wasl, which means ‘the connection’ in Arabic and is the old name for Dubai, tells the story of the UAE as a connector between civilizations and shares the UAE’s innovative spirit.

Al Wasl Opera spans thousands of years of history, featuring the Saruq Al Hadid gold ring, one of the treasures from the Iron Age found in Dubai, which was the inspiration for the Expo 2020 logo.

“The stage is dominated by an image of rings that intersect with one another. The story of Al Wasl begins in the desert, and we created a rather original way of depicting this desert in a metaphorical way,” says Sir David Pountney.

“In the middle act we are in the present, where there is a strong reference to the creation of the Burj Khalifa. We go on into the future in the final act, where we are in pure fantasyland about what the future may or may not look like.”

Celebrating the diverse heritage of the UAE, its achievements to date, and its aspirations for the future, Al Wasl Opera celebrates the power of the human spirit and how we can inspire boundless possibilities when we come together to remember what unites us.

Evoking a sense of reverence, it highlights the beauty of shared connections, truth, and hope.
